vFunction Forward Deployed Engineers

Overview

The vFunction team can act as Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE) during modernization projects. With this role, the vFunction team can help an organization to quickly modernize their applications. vFunction FDEs pair an expertise of vFunction’s platform and its architectural insights with years of engineering background. While a vFunction FDE is not required for a modernization project to be successful, the FDE can speed up the project’s pace.

For a vFunction FDE to be successful, the below requirements can help move projects forward.

Requirements

Requirement
Purpose
Mandatory / Optional
Notes
Access to vFunction Server Web UI
  • Monitor Learning
  • Work on the analysis
  • Downloading measurements, specs, reports
Mandatory

Dev environment:

  • Git access to the code
  • Dev DB (local docker or access)
  • Tools: SDKs + VS Code with vFunction extension that can access the vFunction server
  • AI Coding Agent (e.g., Claude CLI/Extension)
  • Any dev required 3rd party licenses (if relevant)

Ability to refactor / modify / test the code, or generate specs from the code and then implement and test.

Notes:

  • vFunction FDEs will develop on a separate git branch/project
  • vFunction FDEs can use a local docker running a copy of the organization's DB and PostgreSQL (for migration) or connect to a remote Dev DB provided we can experiment on it without disrupting the organization's team
Mandatory

It is best if the vFunction FDE can develop on her / his own vFunction laptop (e.g. through a VPN). This allows the vFunction FDE to use her / his own dev environment (including AI agents and necessary dockers for the dev DB, etc).

Alternatively, an organization can create a VDI which will require setup and support from the organization's team.

SSH access to the vFunction Server
  • Manage the vFunction Server (e.g., doing upgrades)
  • Viewing log files
Optional (vFunction FDEs can support remotely in web sessions)
SSH / RDP access to the machines running the vFunction Agents
  • Manage the vFunction Agents (e.g., doing upgrades)
  • Viewing log files
Optional (vFunction FDEs can support remotely in web sessions)
